Conference Finale Ends in a Draw, Geneva Will Wait Until Saturday to Find out Play-off Fate

Beaver Falls, PA – The day started with Geneva needing a victory and some help in other conference matches. At night's end, the Golden Tornadoes didn't get the help they needed and they were unable to take care of their own business in a 3-3 tie to Waynesburg so now they must wait until Saturday's conference results to find out their play-off fate. The tie moved Geneva's overall record to 7-7-2 and 3-3-1 in the conference while Waynesburg moved to 5-9-1 and 2-3-1 in league play.

Earlier in the day, Bethany defeated Washington & Jefferson and has now clinched a spot in the PAC tournament. The final play-off spot is still up for grabs and Geneva could still qualify for that spot if things fall into place. If Waynesburg defeats W & J by less than three goals on Saturday, Geneva will still fine its way into the play-offs and would grab the fourth and final seed.

On Wednesday night, Waynesburg opened the scoring in a wild sequence that saw the two teams combine for four goals in an 11-minute stretch. After the Yellow Jackets opened the scoring four minutes into the match, Liam O'Halloran tied the score five minutes later with a strike from just inside the box. Teammate Justin Harbison found the net for Geneva four minutes later to give the Golden Tornadoes their only lead of the match, but it was short lived. Waynesburg tied the game again less than two minutes later.

Prior to the halftime whistle, Waynesburg grabbed a 3-2 lead with a goal in the 32nd minute, which is the way the teams went to the locker room. Geneva's DeVaughn John maximized the drama with the game tying goal with less than 15 minutes remaining in regulation.

Neither team managed to score in regulation time so the game headed to overtime. Despite several glorious chances in the extra sessions, Geneva could not find the net. The Golden Tornadoes had two point blank shots midway through the second overtime stanza but got stone-walled and the game ended in a 3-3 tie.

"This is clearly not the result we were seeking," said head coach Gary Dunda. "We have built a culture of success and a standard of excellence in our program that we didn't accomplish this year. However, we still have an opportunity to move forward if things fall into place so it's just about the waiting game. I'm obviously hoping that we get another opportunity next week because our team, especially our seniors deserve it."

Geneva will close out the 2018 regular season on Saturday with a non-conference match against Thomas More College at Reeves Field at 5 pm. Prior to that kick-off, Coach Dunda and the Golden Tornadoes will honor their senior class that has enjoyed an amazing four-year stretch of success that included the program's first-ever conference championship two years ago.
