Washington, PA – It is always important for a coach to have its team playing its absolute best at the end of the season. Nothing could be truer when describing the 2018 Geneva College women's tennis team. The Golden Tornadoes gave their opponents all they could handle during the PAC tournament weekend but came up on the short end in both the semi-final round and in today's consolation match. The Golden Tornadoes dropped a 5-2 decision to host Washington & Jefferson and finished fourth in the PAC tournament.
"Even though we lost today, this may have been our best match of the year," said head coach
Mandee Craft. "We fought hard for every point and I am so proud of my team."
The match opened with W & J taking two of the three doubles matches with the deciding match heading into extra points as the Presidents managed to take number three singles 9-7 despite a gutsy effort from Geneva's duo of
Bekah Locke and
Mady Paquet. Geneva's lone win in doubles came in second doubles thanks to the work of Felicity Ornoff and
Victoria Hinds who captured an 8-5 decision. "We were forced to juggle our line-up a bit because of some sickness today, but I was so happy with the way our girls responded," said Craft.
W & J picked up its remaining three points to clinch the match with wins in 1
st, 2
nd and 6
th singles. Geneva got a 6-2, 6-2 victory from
Michelle Kisiel in fifth singles. Both Orndoff and Hinds split their first two sets in fourth and fifth singles but didn't get a chance to complete the match because the team decision had already been rendered.
Geneva finished its season with an overall record of 8-6 and a fourth place finish in the PAC Tournament.
