Waynesburg, PA – Sometimes the most difficult games to win are the ones where you are expected to win. On Tuesday, the Geneva College women's volleyball faced that scenario as it traveled to Waynesburg to take on a Yellow Jackets team that was winless in conference play. Perhaps the worst fears of head coach
Wendy Smith were being realized early in the match as the Golden Tornadoes dropped the first set to Waynesburg before rebounding for a 3-1 victory. The win moved Geneva's overall record to 14-11, including an 8-7 mark in the PAC. Meanwhile, Waynesburg remained winless in the conference at 0-14, while dropping to 4-22 overall.
Geneva and Waynesburg went back in forth in the first set before the Yellow Jackets prevailed 26-24. Geneva managed to hold off Waynesburg in the second set by the score of 25-19 before cruising in the third and fourth sets by scores of 25-11 and 25-8.
"This certainly wasn't easy," said head coach
Wendy Smith. "Don't let their record fool you because they have been playing much better lately and have given some good teams some trouble. I was proud of the way the ladies rebounded after a tough first set. It is never easy winning on the road and we were able to get a much needed victory."
Sydney McNulty had another strong performance at the net with a team leading 17 kills and a hitting percentage of .325.
Daphne Hunsinger played her normal game with another solid stat line that included 26 assists, 6 kills and 8 digs. Teammate
McKenna Shick led the defensive effort with 20 digs.
Geneva won't have much time to celebrate Tuesday's victory as it heads right back on the road on Wednesday for another conference match at Thiel College to close out the PAC schedule. The Golden Tornadoes will travel to Houghton, NY over the weekend for a regular season ending three-match tournament. The Golden Tornadoes will have to wait until Saturday to see where they will be seeded in next week's PAC tournament that will begin on Tuesday.
