Softball Splits Two Games in Florida

NAPLES, Fla. – The Geneva College softball team split its games on Saturday morning, as both games ended early due to the runs-ahead rule.  In the first game against Nichols College, Geneva lost 15-3 in five innings.  In the second game, Geneva beat Edgewood College, 12-0, with the game also called after five innings.  Geneva is now 8-2 on the season.

In the first game, Nichols jumped on Geneva early, scoring two in the first, six in both the second and third innings, and adding one more in the fourth.  The only highlight for Geneva was a three-run homer from sophomore April Lude in the fourth inning.

In the second game, Geneva did most of its damage late.  The first two innings were scoreless before Geneva pushed across a run in the top of the third to take a 1-0 lead.  The Golden Tornadoes then exploded in the fourth, scoring eight times.  Twelve batters came to the plate for Geneva in the inning.  Geneva got RBI doubles from senior Hannah Logan and junior Ashley Grow, but the big hit for the Golden Tornadoes was another home run from Lude, a three-run blast.

Geneva scored three more times in the top of the fifth, with juniors Haley Sainato and Alexis Nagy picking up RBIs.  Geneva held Edgewood scoreless in the bottom of the inning, and the game was called early.

Every hitter in the starting lineup collected at least one hit for Geneva, with Sainato and senior Laura Innocenzi each adding two hits.  Sophomore Bobbi Ann Theiss threw another complete game shutout, throwing five innings and giving up only two hits, as she improved to 6-0.

"We finally had one of those games where nothing went well from the first pitch," Head Coach Van Zanic said of the first game.  "In a long stretch of games like this, it is likely we will have one and ours happened against Nichols.

"But as we have done all week, the ladies responded and we again used another outstanding effort from Bobbi in the circle to get back on track.  April Lude had another solid game, and I was very proud of the way everyone came back against Edgewood."

Geneva has two final games in Florida on Monday.  The Golden Tornadoes play Newbury College at 9:00 a.m. and Blackburn College at 11:00 a.m.  Geneva has its first home game next Saturday, March 17, when it hosts Penn State Altoona for a doubleheader, starting at 1:00 p.m.
