Geneva Drops Final Games in Florida

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Geneva College softball team put together a good eight day stretch in Florida, but unfortunately it ended with a rough day as the Golden Tornadoes dropped both of their games on Monday.  In the first game, Geneva fell to Newbury College, 9-1, and in the second game, Geneva lost to Blackburn College, 4-3, with Blackburn scoring the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.  In true walk-off fashion, Geneva essentially walked off the field and onto the bus for the long 22 hour drive home, leaving the warmth and sunshine of Florida behind.  Geneva's record is now 8-4.

In the first game, sophomore Bobbi Ann Theiss kept Newbury scoreless through the first three innings.  However, Newbury scored two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings, and then the Nighthawks put the game away with five runs in the sixth.  Geneva's lone run came on an RBI single from freshman Kyleigh Jo Ward in the sixth.

In the second game against Blackburn, Geneva scored first with a run in the top of the third.  The Golden Tornadoes then took advantage of a couple of Blackburn errors to score twice more in the fourth to go up 3-0.  However, Blackburn responded with a run in the fourth, two in the fifth, and then Beavers took advantage of a leadoff walk in the bottom of the seventh to score the winning run.

Freshman Marina Manuppelli led the offense with three hits, while freshman Madison Schultz added two.  Theiss pitched the distance and ended up with loss, dropping her record to 6-2.

"We finished with a dud of a day," Head Coach Van Zanic said.  "We didn't deserve to win either game, and we didn't.  We had a chance for a great trip and we played it into a good one.  We learned a lot this week, though, and now it's time to prepare for games that will define our season."

Geneva will host its first home games of the season when it welcomes Penn State Altoona on Saturday.  The doubleheader action starts at 1:00 p.m.
