Defense Struggles as Softball Swept

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – This is not how the Geneva College softball team wanted to open the home portion of its schedule, playing for the first time since returning from Florida when it welcomed Penn State Altoona on a cold Saturday afternoon.  The doubleheader was bookended by two poor five-run innings, as Penn State Altoona took advantage of several Geneva errors to score five runs in the first inning of the first game, and then score five runs in the last inning of the second game, as it swept Geneva by scores of 6-3 and 10-8.  Geneva's record fell to 8-6, while Penn State Altoona improved to 9-5.

Defense was a big issue on the day, and it immediately showed up in the first inning of the first game as Geneva made two errors that enabled Penn State Altoona to score five runs.  Geneva tried to climb back into the game, with a run in the first and two more in the third on a double from freshman Marina Manuppelli and a two-run homer from sophomore April Lude.  Unfortunately, Geneva could not get any closer, losing 6-3.

Freshman Kyleigh Jo Ward picked up a hard-luck loss, as most of the runs she gave up were unearned.  She pitched all seven innings for the complete game.  Her record is now 1-3 on the season.

The second game started much better for the Golden Tornadoes.  Geneva answered single runs by Penn State Altoona in the second and third innings with three runs of its own in those innings.  Juniors Haley Sainato and Ericka Hess, along with Lude, all had RBIs in the second, while senior Hannah Logan had an RBI single in the third.

That gave Geneva a 6-2 lead heading into the late innings.  However, Penn State Altoona scored three runs in the top of the sixth to cut the deficit to 6-5.  Geneva then scored what appeared to be big insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth when Ward and sophomore Jennifer Rogers scored runs.

However, Geneva committed three errors in the top of the seventh inning that enabled Penn State Altoona to score five runs.  Geneva loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but the Golden Tornadoes failed to score, giving Geneva a very frustrating second loss on the day.  Freshman Vanessa Templeton picked up the loss in the relief and is now 1-1 on the season.

Ward had a big game in the second game, going 5-for-5 from the plate with three runs scored, while Sainato reached base four times and stole two bases.

"If we continue to struggle making routine plays on defense and are unwilling to make adjustments on offense, these are the results we will need to get used to," a frustrated Head Coach Van Zanic said afterwards.  "These losses don't define our season, but they certainly highlight areas of concern moving forward."

Geneva will next travel to Pitt-Greensburg for a doubleheader on Thursday, March 22, starting at 3:30 p.m.
