Geneva Wins Big over Christendom

FRONT ROYAL, Va. – The Geneva College baseball team made a stop on its return trip from Florida on Monday.  That stop was in Virginia to take on Christendom College, and the Golden Tornadoes blew the game open late to defeat Christendom, 13-1.  Geneva is now 7-2 on the season, while Christendom fell to 4-5.

Geneva scored two runs in the top of the first on singles from senior Joey Luciana and freshman Garrison Wieland.  For Wieland, it was the first hit in a big day for the first-year player.

Geneva scored twice more in the top of the fifth inning on a 2-run double from Wieland.  In the bottom of the inning, sophomore Josh Grant managed to get out of a bases load jam, giving up only one run to keep Geneva in the lead, 4-1.

From there Geneva's offense took over.  Senior Vinny Howells hit a 3-run homer in the top of the sixth inning.  Geneva scored another run on a sacrifice fly from freshman Dylan O'Rourke in the seventh, and then the Golden Tornadoes put the game away in the eighth by plating five runs.  Geneva took advantage of multiple Christendom errors in the inning, and Wieland finished off the inning with a home run to center field, leaving him just a triple short of the cycle.  After Christendom failed to score in the eighth, the game was called.

Wieland finished the game 3-for-5 with five RBIs.  Howells drove in four runs, and Luciana scored four runs.  Senior Tyler Pagaduan was 2-for-4 with two doubles and three runs scored.  Grant went five strong innings, giving up three hits and one run, while striking out four, to improve to 3-0 on the season.

"This was one of those games that you had to be mentally tough," Head Coach Alan Sumner said.  "The cold weather was a factor for both teams.  And it took a while after the first inning to get the offense going, but we stayed patient.  It was another quality pitching performance from Josh, and that set the tone for our defense."

Geneva will return home and welcome Penn State Beaver on Saturday for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
