Baseball Sweeps Penn State Beaver

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – On a cold Saturday afternoon, the Geneva College baseball team opened the home portion of its schedule with a doubleheader sweep of Penn State Beaver, 3-2 and 6-5.  Geneva is now 9-2 on the season, while Penn State Beaver fell to 1-7.

In the first game, Geneva scored first when senior Tyler Pagaduan scored on a wild pitch in the first inning to give Geneva a 1-0 lead.  Penn State Beaver took the lead in the top of the fifth on a two run single, but Geneva responded with two runs to go back up 3-2.  Pagaduan and senior Vinny Howells had RBI doubles in the inning.

From there Geneva held on as five different pitchers held Penn State Beaver to just four hits.  Freshman Jason Bagliore picked up his first of the season, while freshman Dylan O'Rourke picked up his first save.  Pagaduan led the offense, going 1-for-2 with a walk, two runs, an RBI, and a stolen base.

In the second game, Geneva once again scored a run in the first inning, this time on an RBI double from senior Joey Luciana.  The Golden Tornadoes had a chance for a big inning, but they left the bases loaded.

In the third inning, Penn State Beaver took advantage of a two-out error by Geneva to score three runs to take a 3-1 lead.  Geneva answered back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double from senior Richie Rowe, and an RBI single from Pagaduan, to go back up 4-3.  However, a two-out, two-run homer from Mitchel Lazz in the top of the sixth gave Penn State Beaver the lead back, 5-4.

That's where it stayed going into the bottom of the seventh.  Howells led off with a single, and senior Forrest Beighley and Luciana followed with walks to load the bases.  Freshman Garrison Wieland then lined a single to right to plate the winning runs and give Geneva the come-from-behind walk-off victory.

Pagaduan again led the offense with two hits, while junior John Suffern pitched a scoreless seventh inning to pick up his first win on the season.

"I thought we played well with the conditions as they were," Head Coach Alan Sumner said.  "It was good to win two close games as we now head into our first conference doubleheader at home on Monday against Chatham."

Geneva does open Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play on Monday when it hosts Chatham for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
