Game Recap: Baseball |

Win Streak Reaches Nine

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – On Monday afternoon the red-hot Geneva College baseball team, winners of seven straight, opened Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play by sweeping Chatham University at home, 8-7 and 12-7.  Geneva's win streak is now up to nine in a row, and its overall record stands at 11-2, 2-0 in the PAC.  Chatham's record fell to 6-7, 0-2 in the PAC.

The first game started poorly for Geneva.  Chatham scored two runs in the top of the first, and the Cougars added four more in the fourth, aided by a Geneva error.  That put the Golden Tornadoes in a 6-0 hole midway through the game.

Geneva cut the deficit in half with three runs in the fifth on a two-run single from junior Dillon Taggart and another RBI single from senior Forrest Beighley

The game remained at 6-3 until Geneva scored another three runs in the bottom of the eighth to tie the score. Junior Mark Overmier had the big hit, a two-run triple to the left center field gap, and then Overmier scored on a bunt single from Taggart.

Tied at six, the game headed to extra innings where Chatham scored a run in the top of the tenth to go back up, 7-6.  However, Geneva scored two in the bottom of the inning on another RBI single from Taggart to tie the score, and then the Golden Tornadoes won in walk-off fashion on a sacrifice fly from senior Vinny Howells, 8-7.

Freshman pitcher Jacob Cardenas was big in the game, as he came in to start the fifth inning in relief and kept the Cougars scoreless for the next five innings, giving up only the run in the tenth.  He finished with six innings, giving up just two hits while striking out four to pick up the win and improve to 2-0.

Taggart had the big game offensively, going 4-for-5 with a run and four RBIs.  Senior Tyler Pagaduan, junior Josh Baptiste, and Overmier all finished with two hits.

In the second game, Chatham again jumped ahead early, scoring two runs in the top of the first.  Geneva got one back in the first and then put up six in the second inning as the Golden Tornadoes bunched together six singles and two hits batsmen to take a 7-2 lead.

From there both teams' offenses continued to put up runs.  Chatham scored three runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth, while Geneva added a run in the third and two more in the fourth, which gave the Golden Tornadoes a 10-7 lead headed into the eighth.  Geneva added two more insurance runs in that inning on a double off the wall from senior Joey Luciana, and the Golden Tornadoes closed out the victory from there, 12-7.

Luciana had the big night in the second game, going 3-for-4, including a double and a triple, scoring two runs and driving in four.  Freshman Dylan O'Rourke added three hits, while Pagaduan, freshman Garrison Wieland, junior Jericho Hilling, and senior Dan Staub all had two hits.  Senior Richie Rowe went five innings, striking out seven, to pick up the win to move his record to 3-0 on the season.  Freshman Daunte Hill pitched the final four innings to close out the win.

"It's nice to get two PAC wins," Head Coach Alan Sumner said.  "We dug ourselves a big hole in the first game, but we fought back.  Cardenas did a very nice job closing out the game on the mound and our offense kept battling.

"In the second game, we got off to a good start and had to keep adding runs as Chatham kept coming back.  Richie and Daunte did a nice job on the mound."

Geneva will host Clarks Summit this Friday and Saturday for doubleheaders, starting at 2:00 p.m. on Friday and 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
