Game Recap: Baseball |

Geneva Falters Late

FORT PIERCE, Fl. – The Geneva men's baseball team dropped its first game of the season on Monday afternoon in the first game of a six game swing through Florida, losing 15-9 to Eastern Nazarene College.  Geneva fell to 2-1 on the season, while Eastern Nazarene improved to 3-0.

The game started well, with Geneva jumping out to a 4-0 lead after two innings, as the Golden Tornadoes capitalized on some wildness from the Eastern Nazarene starting pitcher Daniel Rivera, who issued five walks and hit three batters over the first two innings.

The game turned around in the third as Eastern Nazarene scored seven runs in the inning, six of which were scored with two outs and were unearned due to a Geneva error earlier in the inning.  The Lions would eventually stretch the lead to 8-4 after four innings before the Golden Tornadoes began to battle back.

Geneva managed to score two runs in the fifth, and then the Golden Tornadoes tied the score at 9-9 in the sixth inning as Geneva strung together three straight singles in the rally.
Unfortunately, Eastern Nazarene finished off the game with three runs in each of the eighth and ninth innings, and Geneva eventually fell, 15-9.

Senior Joey Luciana led the offense with four RBIs on the afternoon.  Senior Vinny Howells scored three runs.  Freshman pitcher Jacob Cardenas got the first start of his career, and he pitched two scoreless innings before being unable to get out of the third.  All six runs he gave up in that inning were unearned.  Freshman Daunte Hill also gave the Golden Tornadoes a lift in relief, pitching three solid innings in the middle of the game before eventually running out of gas trying to get through a fourth frame.

Geneva plays Hilbert College tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. as the Golden Tornadoes continue their week of games in Florida.
