Game Recap: Softball |

Geneva Picks Up Two Wins to Start Season

FORT MEYERS, Fla. – The Geneva College softball team started its season off by picking up two victories on the first day of a week-long stretch in Florida.  In the first game, Geneva defeated Penn State Altoona, 6-3, and then the Golden Tornadoes easily knocked off Anna Maria in the second game, 10-2.  Geneva is now 2-0 on the season.

In the first game against Penn State Altoona, Geneva used a four run second inning to take control of the game.  Junior Ashley Grow had the big hit, with a two-out single that scored both juniors Haley Sainato and Ericka Hess.  That put Geneva up 4-1 heading into the third inning.

Penn State Altoona chipped away at the Geneva lead with runs in the third and fifth innings to close to within 4-3.  However, Geneva put the game away with two runs in the bottom of the sixth on singles from Sainato, freshman Kyleigh Jo Ward, and freshman Marina Manuppelli.

The offense was led by Sainato, who went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, one RBI, and one steal.  Ward picked up the first win of her career with 4.1 innings, while freshman Vanessa Templeton picked up the save by finishing off the final 2.2 innings.

In the second game, Geneva jumped on Anna Maria early, scoring six runs in the first two innings, including four runs in the first inning.  Geneva took advantage of ten walks from Anna Maria starter Kathryn Rendock as the Golden Tornadoes coasted to the 10-2 victory.

Manuppelli led the offense, going 2-for-2 with three runs scored and one RBI.  Hess also had two hits in the game.  Sophomore Bobbi Ann Theiss pitched four innings and only gave up one hit to earn the win.

"It was nice to open the season with two wins," Head Coach Van Zanic said afterwards.  "We pitched well and played solid defense, which is always a concern because of our lack of field time.  Offensively, we got some timely hits and were fairly consistent all day.  It's definitely something to build on."

Geneva will play two games again tomorrow, starting with a game against Drew University at 9:00 a.m.  The Golden Tornadoes will follow that up with a game against Rivier College at 11:00 a.m.
