Geneva Wins Two More

NAPLES, Fla. – The Geneva College softball team won two more games this morning in Florida, defeating Drew University, 4-0, behind a complete game shutout from sophomore Bobbi Ann Theiss, and then beating Rivier College, 8-6, in the second game.  Geneva is now 4-0 on the young season.

In the first game, Theiss scattered six hits across seven innings, throwing just 62 pitches in picking up the complete game shutout.  Junior Haley Sainato manufactured two early runs due to her speed.  In the first inning, she led off with a single, stole second base, went to third on a throwing error, and then scored on a wild pitch.  In the third inning, she walked, stole second and third, and then scored on another throwing error from the catcher.

Geneva put the game away in the bottom of the fourth when freshman Kyleigh Jo Ward came up with a key two-out single to drive in two runs, giving Theiss all the cushion she would need as she finished of the 4-0 victory.  Theiss moved to 2-0 on the season.  Sainato led the offense, getting on base all three times she went to the plate, scoring two runs while stealing three bases.

In the second game, Geneva got off to a good start with two runs in the top of the first inning as freshman Madison Schultz drove in freshman Marina Manuppelli and junior Ashley Grow with a two-out single.  However, Rivier responded with three runs in its half of the inning to take back the lead, 3-2.

Geneva answered right back in the top of the second inning with three runs of its own as Manuppelli drove in two runs with a double and then scored herself, giving Geneva the lead back, 5-3, a lead the Golden Tornadoes would not relinquish again.  Geneva added one run in the fourth and then two big insurance runs in the sixth to go up, 8-5, before closing out the game, 8-6.

Manuppelli led the way offensively, going 2-for-3 with four runs scored and three RBIs.  Grow and sophomore April Lude each contributed three hits, while Schultz drove in three runs.  Freshman Vanessa Templeton picked up her first win by getting through the first four innings, while Theiss pitched the final three innings to pick up a save on the day as well.

"Bobbi had the best day of her career in the circle today," Head Coach Van Zanic said afterwards.  "Everything starts with our pitching.  Vanessa was solid again in game two, and we played well defensively.

"We also got production up and down the lineup.  Specifically Marina, April, and Maddy Schultz had big days.  We have a group that works really hard, and it's great to see them get results early."

Geneva plays two more early games again tomorrow, starting with a 9:00 a.m. game against Kenyon College, followed by an 11:00 a.m. game with Clark University.
