Geneva Splits Pair of Games

FORT MEYERS, Fla. – The Geneva College softball team split its games on Wednesday, losing for the first time this season when a late rally fell just short against Kenyon College, 8-7, but the Golden Tornadoes bounced back against Clark University with a 2-0 win in their second game of the day.  Geneva is now 5-1 on the season.

The first game was a high scoring affair.  Kenyon struck for three runs in the top of the first inning, but Geneva responded with three runs of its own in the bottom of the inning as a double from sophomore April Lude scored junior Haley Sainato, and then a single from freshman Madison Schultz scored both Lude and junior Ashley Grow.

Both teams scored one run in the second inning to keep the score tied, 4-4.  Kenyon then scored three runs in the top of the fourth and one more in the top of the sixth to take an 8-4 lead into the bottom of the inning.  Geneva scored three times in its half of the inning, with Ward driving in two and Lude driving in the third, to cut the deficit to 8-7.  Then in the bottom of the seventh, Geneva loaded the bases with two outs, but the Golden Tornadoes couldn't push across a run and lost for the first time on the season.

Geneva was led by Lude, as she finished 3-for-3 with a run and two RBIs.  Grow went 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs as well.  Sainato scored three runs and stole another three bases.

In the second game, Geneva got another standout performance from pitcher sophomore Bobbi Ann Theiss.  One day after pitching a complete game shutout against Drew, Theiss again shut down her opponent, this time with Clark being her victim.  Freshman Kyleigh Jo Ward gave Theiss all the support she would need with a 2-run homer in the fifth inning.  Theiss did the rest from there, allowing just three hits and one walk, while striking out one, as she improved to 3-0 on the season.

"We faced two good teams today and really had to work hard to get at least one win," Head Coach Van Zanic said.  "We didn't play a clean game against Kenyon, but we battled at the plate and gave ourselves a chance in the last inning.  Against Clark, it was again about Bobbi Ann's control and poise in the circle.  She has been outstanding so far and she made it possible for the one big swing by Kyleigh to be the difference.

"We are all looking forward to the day off tomorrow, but we are very pleased with how the first half of the trip has gone."

Geneva will continue play in Florida on Friday against Albion College at 9 a.m.  The Golden Tornadoes will follow that game with a game against The College at Brockport at 11 a.m.
