Game Recap: Softball |

Offense Leads Softball to Two More Victories

FORT MEYERS, Fla. – After getting tremendous pitching for most of this week, which carried the Geneva College softball team to a 5-1 record since arriving in Florida, on Friday the offense took control and pounded its way to two more victories.  In the first game, Geneva defeated Albion College, 11-6, and in the second game, Geneva came back late to beat The College at Brockport in extra innings, 12-11.  Geneva is now 7-1 on the season.

In the first game against Albion, Geneva struck first with three runs in the top of the third inning.  Freshman Madison Schultz drove in two runs with a double, and sophomore April Lude singled in Schultz.  After Albion scored two runs of its own in the bottom of the inning, Geneva scored four more runs in the fourth on an RBI single from Schultz, a 2-run single from freshman Marina Manuppelli, and an RBI single from junior Ashley Grow.  That put Geneva up 7-2.

Albion was able to cut the deficit down to 7-6 with a run in the fifth and three more in the sixth.  However, in the top of the seventh, after Logan and Schultz had driven in runs, Manuppelli put the game away with a two-run home run, and Geneva finished the game off, 11-6.  Sophomore Bobbi Ann Theiss picked up the win, her third on the season, while freshman Vanessa Templeton got the final out for her first save of the season.

Manuppelli had the big game offensively, going 2-for-4, including that first home run of her career, while driving in four runs.  Schultz finished 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs.  Senior Hannah Logan and Lude each added three hits, while freshman Melice Rodriguez contributed two hits.  Junior Haley Sainato also picked up her 100th career hit in the game.

The second game against Brockport was also a high-scoring affair.  Geneva jumped out to a 4-2 lead after two innings, the key play being a bunt single by Sainato that Brockport threw down the line for an error that allowed Logan, junior Ericka Hess, and Sainato to all score.

However, Brockport scored five runs in the third and two more in the top of fifth to take over the lead, 9-4.  At that point, the Golden Tornadoes got their bats going again.  Geneva scored four runs in the fifth inning on an RBI double from Lude, a two-run double from freshman Kyleigh Jo Ward, and an RBI single from Logan, with all three hits coming with two outs.  That closed Geneva to within 9-8, and after giving up a run in the top of the sixth, Geneva tied the game in the bottom of the inning on two-out singles from Grow and Lude.

Neither team scored in the seventh, which sent the game to extra innings.  Brockport scored one run in the top of the eighth to go back up, 11-10.  However, in the bottom of the inning, Geneva pushed across the tying run and then with two outs, Lude sent a ball over the right fielder's head to score Schultz for the winning run, 12-11.

Lude had another big game, going 4-for-5 with a run and three RBIs.  Schultz was 3-for-4 with three runs, while Sainato was 3-for-3 with four runs scored.  Theiss got the win again, going six innings in relief of Templeton.  Theiss improved her record to 4-0.

"It really shows the character that our team is developing to be able to come back late in that second game," Head Coach Van Zanic said.  "April just continues to produce offensively.  It doesn't seem like anyone can get her out right now.  But we really got contributions from everyone today, up and down our lineup.  It was nice to see our offense really step up today when we needed it to.  That said, we've still got to improve and get better.  Our defense wasn't where it needs to be today, and we didn't have great control on the mound today with our balls and strikes.  But to be 7-1 through our first eight games here in Florida is really encouraging."

Geneva has two more games tomorrow morning, playing Nichols College at 9:00 a.m. followed by a game with Edgewood College at 11:00 a.m.
