Game Recap: Softball |

Geneva Breaks Losing Streak with Win at Chatham

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – It's been a rough stretch for the Geneva College softball team since the squad returned from Florida a month ago.  The team has battled the weather and inconsistent play as Geneva wiped out its positive start in Florida with an eight game losing streak as it headed to Chatham University on Thursday night.  That streak reached nine games with a 3-2 loss in game one, but the Golden Tornadoes finally got back into the win column with a 6-0 shutout in game two.  Geneva is now 9-11 overall, 1-5 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Chatham is 3-17 overall, 1-7 in the PAC.

In game one, Chatham jumped out to an early lead by scoring once in the first.  Geneva tied it up in the second on an RBI single from junior Ashley Grow in the second, and then took a brief lead in the fourth when junior Ericka Hess tripled home freshman Kyleigh Jo Ward.  Unfortunately Hess was stranded at third as the next three batters were unable to drive her in.

That proved costly when Chatham tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, and that's where the game stayed until the bottom of the seventh when two walks and an error to the first three Cougar batters loaded the bases, and the next batter won the game with an RBI single.

Ward was 2-for-3 with two runs scored as Geneva struggled offensively again.  Sophomore Bobbi Ann Theiss pitched the complete game and picked up the loss, moving her record to 6-6 on the season.

In game two, Geneva jumped out to a big early lead.  The Golden Tornadoes scored three runs in the first, aided by two Chatham errors, with freshman Madison Schultz coming up with an RBI double.  Geneva added three more runs in the second, with Grow coming up with the big hit, an RBI triple, putting the Golden Tornadoes up 6-0.

Six runs proved more than enough for Ward, as the freshman put together the best pitching performance of her young career, shutting down the Cougars and recording the complete game shutout, 6-0, to move her record to 2-4 on the year.

Offensively, Grow and junior Haley Sainato each had two hits in the game.  Sainato and Ward each scored two runs, while sophomore April Lude drove in two runs.

"It's been a really difficult stretch for all of us," said Head Coach Van Zanic.  "We took advantage of a great pitching effort by Kyleigh and it's a good feeling to finally get one in the left hand column."

Geneva continues with its busy week as the Golden Tornadoes host Bethany on Friday for a doubleheader starting at 3:30 p.m.  Then on Saturday, Geneva will host first place Thomas More for a doubleheader, starting at 11:00 a.m.
