Game Recap: Softball |

Lude and Ward Help Zanic Reach 400th Win

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – Maybe things are starting to change for the Geneva College softball team.  After ending a nine game losing streak last night, Geneva swept Bethany on Friday afternoon, 3-1 and 11-8, behind the play of sophomore April Lude and freshman Kyleigh Jo Ward.  Not only were the wins important for the Golden Tornadoes after the struggles of the last month, but they also pushed Head Coach Van Zanic over 400 career wins.  Geneva evened its record at 11-11, 3-5 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Bethany fell to 10-12, 3-5 in the PAC.

The first game was a continuation from the prior night at Chatham when Ward pitched a complete game shutout, with Ward continuing to pitch well against Bethany.

Geneva got on the board in the third inning on a bases loaded walk from Ward.  Geneva got two more pivotal runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on a two-out, two-RBI triple from Lude to put Geneva up 3-0.

That was all the runs Ward would need.  She went into the seventh having given up just one hit.  She wobbled slightly in the inning, giving up three base runners and one run before finishing out the complete game, 3-1.  The win moved her record to 3-4 on the season.

Geneva managed just four hits in the game, but the Golden Tornadoes made them count.  Freshman Madison Schultz picked up two of the hits, and Lude's triple in the fifth ended up being the game winner.

In game two, Geneva got on the board first with a run in the second, courtesy of a Bethany error.  Lude drove in a run in the third on a sacrifice fly to score junior Haley Sainato, putting the Golden Tornadoes up 2-0.

The top of the fourth proved to be a rough inning for the Golden Tornadoes.  Bethany scored five runs, aided by two Geneva errors, to take a 5-2 lead.  Fortunately for Geneva, Bethany's only lead of the day would prove to be short lived.

Geneva immediately responded in its half of the fourth with six runs.  Geneva opened the inning with six straight singles and eventually batted around, with Lude picking up another two RBIs on a single.  Geneva put the game away in the next inning when Lude drove in two more runs with a single, putting Geneva up 10-5.

Sophomore pitcher Bobbi Ann Theiss struggled a little in the seventh before finally closing out the game, 11-8.  She picked up the complete game win to move her record to 7-6.

The Golden Tornadoes had 16 hits in game two.  Lude was 2-for-3 with a run and five RBIs.  Schultz and junior Ericka Hess added three hits, while Ward, Sainato, and Theiss all contributed two.

"Best day of the year," Head Coach Van Zanic said.  "Bethany is always a really good program.  We were able to build off of a little bit of momentum from last night's win over Chatham.  We got a well-pitched game again from Kyleigh in game one, and we finally got some big, crucial hits in game two.  These wins put us back into position where, if we can keep this going, we might have a shot to do something these last couple of weeks."

Geneva has its fourth doubleheader in five days when it welcomes first place Thomas More to town tomorrow, starting at 11:00 a.m.
