BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – It wasn't the result that Head Coach
Linda Sumner and her Golden Tornado women's soccer team were hoping for on Wednesday afternoon against Oberlin, but it would seem to be another sign of improvement happening in the women's program. Four days after winning back-to-back games in New York over the weekend, Geneva hung tough with the visiting Yeowomen, a team that beat Geneva 8-0 last season, before eventually losing 2-0. Oberlin improved to 2-3, while Geneva fell to 2-3.
Oberlin took the lead in the 33
rd minute when Mikala Jones received a pass behind the Geneva defense and slotted home a shot to give the Yeowomen the lead, 1-0. Despite some strong stretches for Geneva, that's where the game stayed going into halftime.
Geneva almost tied the game early in the second half when, in the 52
nd minute, sophomore
Erin Houser hit a curling 20 yard shot that just banged off the post. Oberlin took advantage of the near miss three minutes later when Jackie Brant doubled the lead with a goal in front of the box.
Houser had another great chance in the 64
th minute when, off a corner kick, her header looked headed for the back of the net when Oberlin's keeper, Isabelle Smith, just got a finger on the high shot to push it over the bar. Despite Geneva's efforts, it could never find a goal in the hard-fought match, losing 2-0.
The shot totals reflect the fact that the game was a fairly balanced match. Oberlin finished with 14 shots, six on goal, while Geneva finished with 11 shots, five on frame. Houser and senior
Megan Schoeneweis led the offense with five shots apiece, including three shots on goal from Houser.
"I thought the team fought really well this afternoon, and we created some good chances," Head Coach
Linda Sumner said. "We just couldn't put it in the back of the net. Oberlin has a strong team again this season, and I was pleased with the competitive nature our team showed today. It's games like today that will hopefully prepare us better for PAC play."
Geneva will travel to Franciscan this Saturday for a game at 1:00 p.m., before coming back home next Wednesday when it hosts Allegheny at 4:30 p.m.
