STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – The Geneva women's soccer picked up another road win on Saturday afternoon, this one in comeback fashion at Franciscan University, 2-1. That makes the third straight road win for Geneva, and the victory evened its record at 3-3 on the season. Franciscan fell to 1-4.
Despite some early pressure by Geneva, Franciscan actually got on the board first with a goal against the run of play in the 19
th minute. Geneva continued to send shots toward the goal in the half, but the Golden Tornadoes could not find the back of the net and went into halftime trailing 1-0.
Geneva was finally rewarded early in the second half when senior
Megan Schoeneweis scored off a direct kick in the 52
nd minute to tie the score. It took less than four minutes before Geneva took the lead on another goal from the penalty spot, this one from sophomore
April Mann. That put Geneva up 2-1, and the Golden Tornadoes would not relinquish the lead, finishing off the victory after 90 minutes.
"This was another good effort from the team," said Head Coach
Linda Sumner. "I was especially pleased with how we were able to come back on the road from a halftime deficit. We're continuing to make progress each game, and hopefully we can carry this momentum into our next two home matches."
Geneva outshot Franciscan, a common theme for the Golden Tornadoes in all but one of their matches this season, by a count of 19-8, including 10-2 in shots on goal. Mann, Schoeneweis, sophomore
Erin Houser, and freshman
Haley LaMorticella all had three shots as Geneva had several players contribute offensively. Junior
Danielle Lincoln came up with one save in picking up the victory.
After playing three of its last four games on the road, Geneva will have back-to-back home games this week as it hosts Allegheny on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m., followed by a match against Marietta on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
