Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Lead Slips Away Late to Allegheny

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – For the first two-thirds of the Geneva College women's soccer match against Allegheny on Wednesday afternoon, the Golden Tornadoes played some of their best soccer of the year against a quality opponent, but two late goals spoiled the evening as Geneva fell, 2-1.  Allegheny improved to 4-3, while Geneva fell to 3-4.

Allegheny came in having won three of its last four matches, including defeating Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) member Chatham, who was picked to finish in the top three of the preseason PAC poll.  That didn't seem to impact Geneva, though.  Junior goalkeeper Danielle Lincoln came up with a big diving save early in the match after Allegheny's Isabella Martinez broke through the Geneva defense and got in on goal.  The Golden Tornadoes took advantage when, a few minutes later in the 31st minute, junior Erica Sumner took a feed from senior Megan Schoeneweis and got behind the Allegheny defense, calming slotting the ball past the keeper and into the net.  Geneva took that lead to halftime, 1-0.

Geneva kept Allegheny away from dangerous spots until the 67th minute, when a foul in the box gave Allegheny a penalty kick, and Martinez left no doubt in tying the game, 1-1.  Both team battled to find the game-winner until, in the 85th minutes, Madelyn Hill came up with a loose ball in the box and hit the back of the net, deflating Geneva and sending Allegheny on to the 2-1 victory.

"This was a frustrating one," said Head Coach Linda Sumner.  "We put ourselves in position to come up with what would have been one of our our best wins of the season, but we just couldn't finish things off.  When Allegheny tied it up, I felt like it deflated our squad a little bit, and we just couldn't regain momentum.  There were certainly some good stretches of play, it just would have been nice to see us hold on for the win."

Allegheny ended up with a slight edge in shots, 11-8 over Geneva, including 5-4 in shots on goal.  Lincoln made three saves in the loss.

Geneva will look to get back onto the winning track when it welcomes Marietta this Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. match.
