BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – For the first time on the season, the Geneva College women's soccer team was able to walk off its home field victorious as it defeated visiting Marietta College, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon. Geneva had come into the contest with an impressive 3-1 record on the road, but had yet to win at home. With the victory Geneva evened its overall record at 4-4, while Marietta fell to 3-5.
Geneva controlled the game in the first half, and the Golden Tornadoes were rewarded in the 27
th minute. Senior
Megan Schoeneweis (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) crossed a ball through the box that freshman
Lexi Dell (Sarver, Pa./Freeport Area) was able to get a leg on and deflect into the back of the net, despite a sliding Marietta defender that reached the ball but could not keep it out of the goal. Geneva kept the pressure up, but settled for a 1-0 halftime lead.
To Marietta's credit, it proved more dangerous in the second half, and it took the coordination of Geneva's defense and junior goalkeeper
Danielle Lincoln (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) to keep the Pioneers off the board. The Golden Tornadoes had a couple of chances to double its lead in the half, but couldn't convert. Fortunately for Geneva, Dell's first half goal would prove all that it would need to secure the victory, 1-0.
"It was really good to pick up a win at home over a solid Marietta squad," Head Coach
Linda Sumner said afterwards. "I'm pleased with the progress this team is making. We probably could have had another goal, which would have made the last few minutes a little easier, but I thought our defense really did a good job of not allowing Marietta to control much through the middle, which allowed our defense to keep them off the board."
Geneva once again outshot its opponent, this time by a 12-7 margin, including a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal. Sophomore
Erin Houser (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) led the team with four shots, two that were on goal. Dell's game-winner was her second goal of the season. Lincoln recorded her third shutout of the season.
Geneva will play at Point Park on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. The Golden Tornadoes will then begin Presidents' Athletic Conference play when it hosts Bethany on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
