BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – After some uncharacteristic early-season struggles for the Geneva College men's soccer team, it appears Head Coach
Gary Dunda may be starting to put some of his young pieces together, as the Golden Tornadoes put together their most dominant performance of the season on Wednesday night, defeating La Roche College, 5-0. Geneva improved to 2-3-1, while La Roche fell to 2-6.
Part of the recent success for Geneva has centered around improved offensive play. Geneva had scored seven times in its prior three matches coming into Wednesday night, and the Golden Tornadoes picked up right where they had left off when freshman
Cole Sauer took a feed from junior
Michael Pohlod in the 12
th minute and put Geneva up 1-0. Three minutes before halftime, junior
Jake Broadwick doubled the lead off an assist from freshman
Micah Guffey, putting Geneva up 2-0 going into halftime.
The floodgates opened for Geneva in the second half, led by senior co-captain
David McKinley, as the midfielder scored twice within eleven minutes, both off passes from Broadwick, to put the game out of reach. Freshman
Reed McCreery finished off the scoring in the 89
th minute on goal that was assisted by freshman
Colin Joyner, giving Geneva a 5-0 win, the most goals the Golden Tornadoes have scored this season.
"It was good to see us put together a complete 90 minute effort tonight," Coach Dunda said afterwards. "Our focus and determination carried us, and I thought Dave McKinley was a great example of both."
Geneva got strong contributions from several freshmen on the night, but it was two upperclassmen in McKinley, with two goals, and Broadwick, with a goal and two assists, that led the way. Geneva outshot La Roche 32-5, including a 14-0 advantage in shots on goal. Sophomore
Nate Burkhart got his second start in goal for Geneva, though because of Geneva's dominance both offensively and defensively, Burkhart was not called on to make a save.
Geneva will get a much tougher test on Friday when it travels to take on the undefeated Mount Union Raiders at 7:00 p.m. The Golden Tornadoes will then return home on Tuesday for its last non-conference matchup, this one against Allegheny at 7:00 p.m., before opening Presidents' Athletic Conference play a week from Saturday against Bethany.
