Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Geneva Falls in Double Overtime at #25 Mount Union

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Geneva College men's soccer team put up a valiant effort on the road at undefeated and 25th ranked Mount Union on a rainy and dreary Monday evening, but a goal with three minutes remaining in double overtime gave Mount Union a 1-0 victory over Geneva.  Mount Union is now 6-0 on the season, while Geneva fell to 2-4-1.

Geneva faced a stiff wind in the first half.  As a result, Mount Union had the better of the play, but the Golden Tornadoes managed to defend well enough to keep the Raiders off the board.  Sophomore goalkeeper Nate Burkhart (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) made a big diving stop with three minutes remaining in the half to keep the game scoreless, as Mount Union outshot Geneva seven to one in the half.

With the wind at its back, Geneva began to apply pressure as the game became more even in the second half.  Geneva's best chance came in the 75th minute when junior Jake Broadwick (McKees Rocks, Pa./Robinson Township Christian) hit a looping ball over the top of the Mount Union defense that freshman Alex Yoder (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) ran onto, but his near-post attempt just missed.  Another big diving save by Burkhart with just minutes remaining kept the game scoreless at the end of regulation.

The first overtime played out fairly evenly, with neither team finding a good scoring chance.  Then, with 3:13 remaining in the second overtime, after a save by Burkhart, Geneva was unable to clear the ball in front of the net and Mount Union took advantage by netting the game winner.

"I'm very proud of the way my guys fought and competed tonight," Head Coach Gary Dunda said afterwards.  "We must learn from this game, grow as a team, and be ready to fight together again tomorrow night."

Burkhart was a big reason why Geneva made it to double overtime, as the goalkeeper came up with ten saves.  While Geneva had a few dangerous chances on the day, the Golden Tornadoes ended up being outshot 15-6.

Geneva will be tested with a quick turnaround.  Because of the thunderstorm last Friday which forced the Mount Union game to be played this evening, Geneva won't have much time to rest as it hosts Allegheny at 7:00 p.m. tomorrow.
