Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Women’s Tennis Splits Pair of Matches

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio – The Geneva College women's tennis team traveled to Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Saturday to take part in two matches against Mount Vernon Nazarene and Cedarville, and the Golden Tornadoes ending up splitting the matches, losing to Cedarville, 0-9, before defeating Mount Vernon Nazarene, 7-2.  Geneva is now 6-4 on the season.

In the first match of the day against Cedarville, the Yellow Jackets proved to be too tough for the Golden Tornadoes, as Cedarville swept all nine matches.

Things were much different in the second match of the day against Mount Vernon Nazarene.  Geneva got off to a good start by winning two of the three doubles matches, and then the Golden Tornadoes finished off the victory by winning five of six singles matches.  Juniors Rachael Letterman (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) and Victoria Hinds (Montrose, Pa./Montrose) both picked up comeback three-set wins, while senior Katherine Deitrick (Beaver, Pa./Beaver), junior Jana Newberry (Lititz, Pa./Warwick), and sophomore Felicity Orndoff (New Stanton, Pa./Greensburg Catholic Central) also picked up wins.  Hinds' victory in particular was noteworthy as she lost the first set, fell down 4-1 in the second set, before storming back to win that set and then the third set tiebreaker, 10-0.

"This was a very long day of tennis against two scholarship schools," Head Coach Mandee Craft said.  "It was definitely a tough start to the day against Cedarville, but the team did a great job of bouncing back just an hour later against Mount Vernon Nazarene.  Rachael and Victoria had especially exciting comebacks!"

The women's tennis team will host Washington & Jefferson on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. in a rescheduled match from a rainout this past week.  Then on Saturday, on Geneva's Homecoming, both the women's and the men's tennis teams will host Penn State Behrend starting at 11:00 a.m.
