BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – This was a game that Head Coach
Linda Sumner and her Golden Tornado soccer team probably feels like it let slip away, as despite having the better of the play for much of the night, a late goal from Mount Aloysius College sent the Mounties on to a 2-1 victory over Geneva on Tuesday night at Reeves Field. Mount Aloysius improved to 3-0, while Geneva fell to 0-2.
Geneva got on the board first when sophomore
Erin Houser headed in a pass from sophomore
April Mann in the 22
nd minute to give the Golden Tornadoes the lead. Mount Aloysius was able to find an equalizer 13 minutes later when Cheyenne Kuncher got in behind the Geneva defense and broke free into the box, and she slotted a ball near post that Geneva goalkeeper
Danielle Lincoln didn't have a shot to save. That's where things stood going into halftime, tied at 1-1.
In the second half, Geneva turned up the pressure even more, with several chances the Golden Tornadoes couldn't put away. In fact, Geneva hit the crossbar three times during the second half, but could never manage to find the back of the net. Those missed chances came back to bite the Golden Tornadoes when, in the 89
th minute, Mount Aloysius defender Leah Frerichs took a lofting free kick from 35 yards out that Lincoln didn't get a good view of as it cleared the defense, and the ball floated down just inside the top corner of the Geneva goal, giving Mount Aloysius the lead, and ultimately the win, 2-1.
Geneva once again out-shot its opponent, as the Golden Tornadoes managed to fire 18 shots, with seven on frame, not including the three that hit the crossbar. Lincoln managed five saves on the night.
"This was certainly a frustrating result," said Head Coach
Linda Sumner. "We had several chances throughout the second half to score, and we were probably a bit unlucky at times. From that perspective, I'm encouraged about some of our good stretches of play again, but we need to be able to find a way to put some more of those chances into the back of the net. But I'm proud of the way our team fought against a good Mount Aloysius squad and I trust that, despite our frustration, that this is a game we can take some things out of and improve upon."
Geneva heads back out onto the road this weekend when the Golden Tornadoes travel to New York for two games. They play Medaille College on Friday at 5:00 p.m., and then travel to Hilbert College for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff on Saturday before returning home.
