Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer Dominates Medaille

BUFFALO, NY – The Geneva College women's soccer team left no doubt on Friday night in its matchup with Medaille College, dominating from start to finish in picking up its first win of the season, 4-0.  Geneva improved to 1-2, while Medaille fell to 0-3.

In Geneva's first two games of the season, both matches saw the Golden Tornadoes outshoot their opponent, only to be unable to convert enough of their chances to pick up the win.  In fact, Head Coach Linda Sumner and the Golden Tornadoes probably feel they are not that far away from being 3-0 on the season.

So on Friday night, Geneva let out some frustrations, as it got on the board early and then put the game away in the second half.  The scoring started with a goal from senior Megan Schoeneweis in the 13th minute, assisted by sophomore Erin Houser.  That's where the game stayed as the two teams headed into halftime.

In the second half, Geneva broke the game open.  Freshman Haley LaMorticella scored in the 51st minute on an assist from senior Hannah Sleight to double Geneva's lead.  Junior Erica Sumner scored in the 73rd minute on an assist from sophomore April Mann, and then sophomore Natalia Muoio finished off the scoring with a goal in the 90th minute on another assist from Houser.

"It was really good to see more of these chances finally end up in the back of the net," Coach Sumner said afterwards.  "It felt like we were due to convert some of these shots, and tonight we were rewarded for some really good play.  We've got to continue to get better, though, and now the challenge is to do it again tomorrow against Hilbert."

The final stats showed Geneva with a staggering 32 shots, including 20 shots on goal.  Schoeneweis led the way with eight shots, while Mann finished with six.  Medaille managed just four shots, all on frame, and junior Danielle Lincoln managed to keep a clean sheet for her first shutout of the season.

Geneva will stay overnight in New York tonight and then head to Hilbert College tomorrow for a 1:00 p.m. match.  The Golden Tornadoes will the return home tomorrow night and be back on the field next Wednesday for a 4:30 p.m. start time against Oberlin College.
