GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Geneva College women's soccer team made the trip north to take on Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Grove City on Saturday afternoon, tasked with trying to contain the PAC-favorite Wolverines. The Golden Tornadoes held on for 70 minutes, but two goals just minutes apart in the second half proved to be the difference, as Grove City won, 2-0. Grove City improved to 6-5-2, 3-0 in the PAC, while Geneva fell to 5-5, 1-1 in the PAC.
Grove City proved to have the better of the possession for most of the game, but Geneva's defense was able to hold strong and keep the Wolverines off the board in the first half, in large part due to the play of senior goalkeeper
Danielle Lincoln (Milton, Pa./Milton Area), leaving the game still scoreless heading into the halftime break.
Things remained scoreless until the 71
st minute when Grove City finally broke through on a goal by Ruby Mattson. Just over a minute later, Grove City put the game away with a second goal, this one coming from Michaela Burke, and the Wolverines finished the game off, 2-0.
"We knew this was going to be a tough challenge," said Head Coach
Linda Sumner. "I thought our defense played solidly under a lot of pressure, but we just couldn't gain enough possession throughout the match to keep them off the board."
Grove City finished with a commanding 28-7 advantage in shots, including a 12-6 edge in shots on goal. Lincoln made ten saves or the final score could have been worse.
The Golden Tornadoes return home for a match next Wednesday against Chatham, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
