Women’s Tennis Finishes Regular Season with Win over Bethany

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College women's tennis team finished up its regular season on Wednesday evening with a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match against Bethany that was moved later in the evening due to the rain that forced the match indoors.  Despite the later start time, Geneva had no problem with the Bison, winning 5-0 in a match that was called early once one team hit five points.  Geneva improved to 7-4 overall, 4-3 in the PAC, while Bethany fell to 1-7, 1-6 in the PAC.

Geneva swept the doubles portion of the match.  Senior Rachael Letterman (Moon Township, Pa/Moon Area) and junior Felicity Orndoff (New Stanton, Pa./Greensburg Catholic Central) won their match in #1 doubles, 8-3.  Seniors Victoria Hoal (Montrose, Pa./Montrose) and Bekah Locke (Atwater, Ohio/Marlington) had to battle before pulling out the tiebreaker in #2 doubles, winning 8-7.  Then senior Jana Newberry (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) and sophomore Mady Paquet (Ellsworth, Wisc./Ellsworth) finished off the doubles sweep with a win in #3 doubles, 8-1.

Letterman and freshman Laura Lin Comollo (Smyrna, Del./Polytech) were the first to finish their singles matches, sweeping each of their opponents in #1 and #6 singles, respectively.  That ended the match, with Orndoff, Hoal and Newberry each having won a set in their matches when things were called.

"We were very glad to get this in, with the bad weather predicted for the next couple of days," said Head Coach Mandee Craft.  "We now can look ahead to the PAC playoffs starting next week."

With the win against Bethany, Geneva should receive at least one home playoff match when the playoffs begin next Tuesday.  The Golden Tornadoes are likely to face Saint Vincent in the first round, a team they beat earlier this season, 6-3.
