BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – In what was the last home match of the fall season for the Geneva College women's tennis team, the Golden Tornadoes made sure to go out with a bang with a 6-0 victory over Saint Vincent on Wednesday evening in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) quarterfinals. The match was called early after Geneva clinched the win. Geneva improved to 8-4 overall, while Saint Vincent finished its season at 8-5.
Geneva put itself in great position during the doubles portion of the match, sweeping all three points. Senior
Rachael Letterman (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) and junior
Felicity Orndoff (New Stanton, Pa./Greensburg Catholic Central) earned an 8-5 victory in #1 doubles. Seniors
Victoria Hoal (Montrose, Pa./Montrose) and
Bekah Locke (Atwater, Ohio/Marlington) won easily in #2 doubles, 8-2. Senior
Jana Newberry (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) and freshman
Laura Lin Comollo (Smyrna, Del./Polytech) finished the doubles sweep with an 8-6 victory in #3 doubles.
Hoal and Newberry then cruised in #3 and #4 singles, respectively, by identical 6-1, 6-0 scores. After sophomore
Mady Paquet (Ellsworth, Wisc./Ellsworth) won in #6 singles 6-2, 6-2, both teams decided to end the match on a cool evening, with Geneva already reaching the needed point total to clinch the match.
"The doubles matches were really tight early on," said Head Coach
Mandee Craft, "and we had to step up our level of play. Once we got through those matches, our singles players settled in and finished the job."
The top four seeds all advanced in the quarterfinals. Geneva will face #1-seed Grove City at 1:00 p.m. on Friday at Washington & Jefferson, with the other semifinal match between W&J and Westminster scheduled for 4:00 p.m. The championship match will be played at W&J on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
