Women’s Soccer Overwhelms Bethany

BETHANY, W.Va. – A day after the Geneva College men's soccer team traveled to Bethany and defeated the Bison 4-0, the women's soccer team followed suit with a dominating 3-0 victory over Bethany on Wednesday afternoon.  Geneva improved to 8-6 overall, 3-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Bethany fell to 1-12-1, 1-4 in the PAC.

Geneva got on the board in the 31st minute when senior Erica Sumner (Beaver Falls, Pa./Beaver County Christian) ran onto a ball sent over the top by freshman Lydia Beare (Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield Christian), and she scored past the Bethany keeper from 15 yards out to give the Golden Tornadoes a 1-0 lead.  That's where things stayed going into the halftime break, with Geneva holding a 7-1 advantage in shots.

Freshman Katherine Estep (Dublin, Pa./Pennridge) doubled the Geneva lead early in the second half.  She received a pass from Sumner in the 51st minute and scored from inside the box to make it 2-0.  It didn't take long after Estep's goal for junior Erin Houser (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) to get onto the scoreboard, as she added to the lead just three minutes later with another Golden Tornado goal off an assist from junior April Mann (Colorado Springs, Colo./Evangelical Christian Academy), increasing Geneva's lead to 3-0.  The Golden Tornadoes then closed out the victory from there.

"It's always good to go on the road and pick up a conference victory," said Head Coach Linda Sumner.  "Getting the first goal was important, and it allowed us to play from ahead.  We're getting contributions from a number of people right now offensively, which makes us a tougher team to defend.  This hopefully gives us a little bit of momentum heading into a key game this Friday against W&J."

Geneva finished with a 15-5 advantage in shots, including a 9-1 edge in shots on goal.  Houser finished with a team-high four shots, including three shots on goal.  Senior goalkeeper Danielle Lincoln (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) had a fairly quiet day, making the only save she was called on for, to pick up her PAC-leading sixth shutout of the season.

The Golden Tornadoes return to action on Friday when they host W&J at 5:00 p.m. in the final home regular season match of the season for Geneva.
