Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Broadwick’s Two Goals Lead Men’s Soccer to PAC Win Over Thiel

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College men's soccer team opened Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play on Saturday night when it hosted Thiel, and senior Jake Broadwick (Aliquippa, Pa./Robinson Township Christian) scored twice to lead Geneva to a 3-1 victory over the Tomcats.  With the victory, Geneva improved to 5-6 overall, 1-0 in the PAC, while Thiel fell to 0-9-2, 0-2 in the PAC.

Geneva dominated play from the start, and Broadwick put Geneva on the board just over 16 minutes into the game when he took a pass inside the box from senior James Mincone (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) and scored from five yards out.  Broadwick doubled Geneva's lead in the 37th minute when he received another pass in front of the goal, this one from sophomore Jake Marsan (Eden Prarie, Minn./Homeschool), and the senior scored again from five yards out.  That goal sent Geneva to a 2-0 halftime lead, with the Golden Tornadoes holding an 11-1 advantage in shots in the first half.

Thiel cut Geneva's lead to one when Neko Hatton scored against the run of the play in the 63rd minute, pulling the Tomcats to within 2-1.  However, it didn't take long for Geneva to respond.  Sophomore Reed McCreery (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) received a short pass from junior Kevin Pasho (Smithville, Ohio/Central Christian) and scored into the upper corner of the goal from a tough angle just a couple yards away from the net, giving the Golden Tornadoes an insurance goal and increasing Geneva's lead to 3-1.  The Golden Tornadoes held on from there, finishing off the Tomcats for their first PAC victory of the season.

"Any time you can get a win in the conference, it's a good victory," said Head Coach Gary Dunda.  "Despite their record, Thiel is a much-improved team that works extremely hard, and it was good to get a win over a PAC opponent.  We still have areas we need to improve on, though, so we'll look to do that as we get ready for Grove City next week."

Geneva finished the game with a 16-5 edge in shots, including a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal.  Broadwick finished with a game-high five shots, including four on goal, while freshman Chris Viveros (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon McMillan) earned his first start and was active with three shots.  Junior Nate Burkhart (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) made two saves to pick up the victory.

Geneva will have several days off before it heads to PAC preseason-favorite Grove City next Saturday for a 7:00 p.m. start.
