NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Geneva College women's soccer team finished up its season with an afternoon match at Westminster, and the Golden Tornadoes fell to first-place Westminster, 1-0. Geneva closed out the year with an 8-9 overall record, 3-5 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC). Westminster clinched the #1 seed heading into the PAC playoffs with an 12-5-2 record, 7-0-1 in the PAC.
Geneva hung around early against the powerful Titans, keeping the game scoreless until the 28th minute when Westminster's Kayla Trozzi found the back of the net to put the Golden Tornadoes in a 1-0 hole. Geneva kept Westminster off the board the remainder of the half, but couldn't find an equalizer in heading into the break facing a one-goal deficit. The Titans held a 13-5 edge in shots, though both teams each had four shots on goal.
Westminster came out of the break looking for a second goal, and the Titans dominated the possession, pressuring the Geneva defense with 13 shots in the first 25 minutes. Senior goalkeeper
Danielle Lincoln (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) came up with several key saves, though, to keep Geneva in the game. The Golden Tornadoes picked up their play over the final 20 minutes, but they could never figure out a way to break through the Westminster defense, eventually falling 1-0.
"I was proud of the way our team battled today against a very good Westminster team," said Head Coach
Linda Sumner. "It's disappointing not to qualify for the PAC playoffs, but I'm grateful for the work these ladies, especially our seniors, have put in over the course of the year."
Westminster finished the game with a 29-9 advantage in shots, including a 12-6 edge in shots on goal. Lincoln came up with a season-high 11 saves to keep Geneva in the game in the final contest of her standout career. Senior
Erica Sumner (Beaver Falls, Pa/Beaver County Christian) also finished up a strong season and career with a team-high three shots.
In addition to Lincoln and Sumner, Geneva will have to say goodbye to senior starter
Lydia Roth (Butler, Pa./Homeschool) and senior reserve
Natalia Muoio (Beaver Falls, Pa./Beaver Falls).
