BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – It's been a rough start to the conference season for the Geneva College baseball team. Since returning from Florida ten days ago, the Golden Tornadoes are still looking for their first win back in Pennsylvania, and those struggles continued on Tuesday afternoon as Geneva suffered a doubleheader sweep in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play against Westminster by scores of 7-2 and 10-3. Westminster improved to 7-5, 2-0 in the PAC, while Geneva fell to 4-9, 0-5 in the PAC.
Sophomore
Jacob Cardenas (Homestead, Fla./Miami Killian) took the mound in the first game, a seven inning affair, and he struck out four in the first two innings. His defense let him down in the third, though, as two errors with two outs led to four unearned runs for Westminster.
Geneva got one of those runs back in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI-double from senior
Dillon Taggart (Livingston Manor, N.Y./Livingston Manor Central), but another Geneva error in the top of the fifth helped Westminster to three more runs, putting the Titans up 7-1. Senior
Jericho Hilling (Williamsburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) drove in a run in the bottom of the fifth, but that was the last scoring in the game, with Westminster closing out the 7-2 win.
Cardenas fell to 1-2 with the loss. He went four innings and gave up just four hits and one walk while striking out five, but his final line showed seven runs, just two earned, because of the errors behind him. Taggart reached base all three times, going 1-for-1 with a double and two walks. Sophomore
Garrison Wieland (Sharpsville, Pa./Sharpsville) also got on base three times, finishing 1-for-2 with two walks and a run.
Junior
Josh Grant (Allison Park, Pa./Shaler) got the start in the second game, and the Titans picked up single runs in the first and second, and two runs in the third, knocking him out of the game after three innings.
The Geneva bullpen struggled as well, though, with the Westminster offense continuing to push across runs in every inning but the sixth and eighth. Trailing by ten runs going into the bottom of the ninth, the Geneva offense finally stirred for three runs, with senior
Mark Overmier (Crofton, Md./Mount St. Joseph) driving in two runs, but it was too late at that point as Westminster won the second game, 10-3.
Grant's final line was three innings, seven hits, one walk, four earned runs and four strikeouts. With the loss, he fell to 0-3 on the season. Overmier finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs, while senior
Jacob Yarnell (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) and freshman
Alex Fee (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) each added two hits.
Geneva heads to Clarks Summit this weekend for four games, two on Friday and two on Saturday, before coming back home for another game next Tuesday against Penn State New Kensington.
