Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Women’s Tennis Cruises to Two Victories on Saturday

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College women's tennis team opened its season at home on Saturday afternoon at Blackhawk Courts with two matches, and the Golden Tornadoes cruised in both matches, defeating Mount Aloysius, 8-1, and then following that up with a win over Penn State Altoona, 9-0.  Geneva is now 2-0 on the young season.

In the first match against Mount Aloysius, Geneva swept the doubles portion with senior Rachael Letterman (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) and junior Felicity Orndoff (New Stanton, Pa./Greensburg Catholic Central) picking up a win in #1 doubles, senior Jana Newberry (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) and freshman Emily Grove (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley) picking up a win in #2 doubles, and senior Victoria Hoal (Montrose, Pa./Montrose) and freshman Laura Lin Comollo (Smyrna, Del./Polytech) earning a victory in #3 doubles.

Letterman, Hoal, Newberry, Comollo and sophomore Kaylee McCall (Bemus Point, N.Y./Maple Grove) all picked up wins in singles to finish off the match, 8-1.

Geneva had a big advantage against in the second match against Penn State Altoona as the Lions had only four players available, which meant they had to forfeit a doubles match and two singles matches right off the bat.  The Golden Tornadoes took care of the rest.  Letterman and Orndoff picked up a win in #1 doubles, while Hoal and sophomore Mady Paquet (Ellsworth, Wisc./Ellsworth) combined to pick up a win in #2 doubles.  Orndoff, Hoal, Newberry and Grove then all dominated their matches in singles competition, sweeping Penn State Altoona 9-0.

"It's always tough to play two matches in one day," said Head Coach Mandee Craft.  "However, our team stayed focused and strong to pick up two wins before we head into conference play.  Despite having a lot of new partnerships in doubles, our play looked solid."

Geneva opens conference play next when it travels to Grove City on September 10 for a 4:30 p.m. match.
