BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College women's team got back into the win column Wednesday evening when it defeated Hilbert, 3-0, at Merriman Athletic Complex. Geneva evened its overall record to 4-4, while Hilbert fell to 0-4.
Geneva had the better of the play for most of the night, and it was reflected in the stats at the end of the contest. Senior
Erica Sumner (Beaver Falls, Pa./Beaver County Christian) got Geneva on the board in the 13
th minute when she took a pass from sophomore
Lexi Dell (Sarver, Pa./Freeport Area) and scored from just a couple of yards in front of the net to give the Golden Tornadoes the early lead. Despite several more chances, Geneva couldn't find another goal, taking a 1-0 lead into the half.
Dell doubled the lead just over seven minutes into the second half when she made a darting run through the defense and slotted the ball past the keeper from eight yards out. Twelve minutes later, junior
Erin Houser (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) scored another goal for Geneva off a pass from Sumner, extending Geneva's lead to 3-0, which closed out the scoring on the evening.
"It was good to get back into the win column after a couple of tough losses," said Head Coach
Linda Sumner. "We probably should have had a few more goals, but we held possession well and generated a lot of chances, which is encouraging, especially as we prepare for conference play coming up soon."
Geneva peppered the Hilbert goal with 34 shots, 19 of those shots on goal. Hilbert managed just three shots all game, all of them coming in the first half. Freshman
Lydia Beare (Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield Christian) led the team with nine shots, including four on goal. Senior goalkeeper
Danielle Lincoln (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) made two saves to pick up her third shutout of the season.
Geneva will have a break of about ten days before it begins Presidents' Athletic Conference play when it hosts Thiel on Saturday, October 5, at 4:30 p.m.
