BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – One thing Geneva College men's soccer Head Coach
Gary Dunda always does is schedule challenging non-conference opponents for his teams, and this year is no different as Geneva battled but fell to undefeated and #16-ranked Penn State Behrend on Saturday night, 2-0. With the victory, Penn State Behrend improved to 9-0, while Geneva fell to 4-6.
Despite the challenging first ten games of the season, the Golden Tornadoes had been tied or had the lead with ten minutes remaining in every match they had played this season. Unfortunately, that streak ended on Saturday night. Penn State Behrend got on the board in the 32
nd minute when a ball in the box bounced to Behrend's Jason Betts, who scored from five yards out to give the Lions the early lead, which is where things stayed going into halftime.
Geneva's best chance to score came five minutes into the second half when sophomore
Ian Gelsinger (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) headed one that appeared headed into goal before Behrend's goalkeeper Matt Warnaka managed to leap and get a fingertip on it to push it just over the bar.
Penn State Behrend put the game away in the 69
th minute when Andrew Mastovich scored off a set piece from eight yards out, doubling Behrend's lead, and despite some late pressure by Geneva in the final ten minutes, the Golden Tornadoes could not find a goal, dropping the match, 2-0.
Penn State Behrend finished the game with an 11-6 edge in shots, including a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal. The game proved to be a physical affair, as seven yellow cards were given out, five on the Lions. Behrend also finished with 19 fouls compared to Geneva's 13.
With Saturday's match complete, Geneva has finished its non-conference schedule and will now look ahead to Presidents' Athletic Conference play. The Golden Tornadoes will return to the field next Saturday when they host Thiel at 7:00 p.m.
