NEW CONCORD, Ohio – There wasn't much that went well for the Geneva College women's soccer team on Wednesday afternoon when it traveled to Muskingum to take on the Fighting Muskies. Geneva fell down early and could never recover, dropping the match 3-0. Muskingum improved its record to 1-1, while Geneva's loss moved it to 1-1 as well.
Muskingum took the lead just 19 minutes into the game on a goal by Natalie Woodward, and that's where things stayed heading into halftime as Muskingum outshot Geneva 5-3 in the first half.
Muskingum doubled its lead in the 57
th minute on a goal by Maddie Wirtley, and then Muskingum finished things off when Woodward scored her second of the game with just over six minutes remaining. A minute later Geneva had a chance to finally get on the scoreboard, but the Golden Tornadoes missed a penalty kick after senior
Erica Sumner (Beaver Falls, Pa./Beaver County Christian) was taken down in the box, and the game finished out at 3-0.
"We just looked flat from the start," said Head Coach
Linda Sumner. "We looked like a team that had been sitting on the bus for almost three hours on the trip here. I felt like it was a more competitive game than the score might indicate, but either way, it's just one of those games you learn from your mistakes and then move on."
Muskingum held a 12-9 advantage in shots, but its biggest advantage was in shots on goal, as the Fighting Muskies finished with nine shots on goal compared to just two for Geneva. Junior
Erin Houser (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) led the team with three shots. Senior goalkeeper
Danielle Lincoln (Milton, Pa./Milton) finished with five saves on the evening.
Geneva next travels to Mount Aloysius on Saturday for a match starting at 2:00 p.m. The Golden Tornadoes follow that match by returning back home for a contest against Franciscan next Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.
