Senior Spotlight: Baseball

(For each day this week during NCAA Division III Week, Geneva Athletics will be highlighting and remembering the spring sports seniors who had their seasons cut short due to the coronavirus.)

Today we are highlighting the baseball team's lone senior, Josh Grant (Allison Park, Pa./Shaler), who had his baseball career end unexpectedly when athletics were cancelled due to the coronavirus.

The baseball team was down in Florida over Spring Break when the season was suspended.  Geneva had just defeated Marywood in the second game of a doubleheader on Thursday, March 12, doing so in dramatic walk-off fashion.  The Golden Tornadoes were preparing to play North Central the following morning, warming up at the field, when the games were put to a halt.  At that time, no one was sure what was coming next, so Geneva returned home earlier than anticipated.  It wasn't long after the team arrived home that everyone realized the season was likely over.

Grant, a mechanical engineering major, saw immediate playing time for the Golden Tornadoes as soon as he arrived on campus his freshman season in 2017.  He appeared in 14 games his first year, starting five of those contests.  His best season came the following year, when Geneva got off to a hot start.  The Golden Tornadoes began the season 14-2, with Grant winning four games during that stretch, including a complete-game victory over Hilbert in which he gave up just two hits and one unearned run while striking out nine batters.

This season he had pitched in two games already, including picking up a victory in one of the games of Geneva's season-opening doubleheader sweep at Gallaudet.  For his career he appeared in 41 games, including 22 starts.  He pitched 105.2 innings while striking out 87 batters.

"Josh was one of our top pitchers throughout his four seasons with us," said Head Coach Alan Sumner.  "He was a really strong leader on our team, and we were really blessed to have Josh as part of our program.  I want to thank him for all his hard work over his time at Geneva, and we wish him all the best in his future ahead."
