Women’s Tennis Victorious in Season-Finale against Thiel

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College women's tennis team wrapped up its fall season on Wednesday night with a good win over a Thiel squad that had convincingly knocked off the Golden Tornadoes earlier in the season.  That first loss cost Geneva a spot in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) playoffs slated to start next week, but the victory on Wednesday sends this group into the offseason with a victory, which is the third straight win for the Golden Tornadoes, improving their record to 4-6.

Seniors Kaylee McCall (Bemus Point, N.Y./Maple Grove) and Mady Paquet (Ellsworth, Wisc./Ellsworth) got Geneva off to a good start with an 8-4 victory in #1 doubles.  Graduate student Jana Newberry (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) and sophomore Ella Miller (Freedom, Pa./Ambridge) added another point with a win in #3 doubles, 8-4, giving the Golden Tornadoes a lead heading into singles play.

Newberry added another victory for Geneva by easily winning her match in #2 singles 6-1, 6-0.  Paquet also added another point in #3 singles by a score of 6-4, 6-4.  Freshman Delaney Winterhalter (Carnegie, Pa./South Fayette) wrapped up her strong freshman fall campaign with another victory, winning in #4 singles 6-0, 6-1.  Senior Caleigh Pumphrey (Martinsburg, W.Va./Hedgesville) finished up the scoring for the Golden Tornadoes in #5 singles with a victory by a score of 6-2, 6-3, which meant each of Geneva's three seniors and one graduate student finished the season with a victory.

"One of our biggest goals every season is to show improvement throughout," said Head Coach Mandee Craft.  "I don't know of much better evidence than to beat a team in Thiel tonight, 6-3, that we lost to 8-1 in September.  This team has fought so hard to finish out strong after a rough start, and I'm so proud of their perseverance.  And a special congrats our three seniors (and one graduate student) who all contributed to this win!"

The women's season is largely wrapped up in the fall, but the Golden Tornadoes will play at least one or two matches in the spring.
