Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Waynesburg Pulls Away in Second Half

WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Geneva College women's soccer team had a chance to clinch a spot in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) playoffs on Tuesday night at Waynesburg, but after a close first 75 minutes, the Yellow Jackets ran away late for a 7-1 win in Geneva's final regular season game of the season.  The Golden Tornadoes will now need help in order to advance to the postseason.  Geneva finishes up its regular season 5-12 overall, 4-5 in the PAC, while Waynesburg improved to 8-7-1, 4-4-1.

Freshman Lillie Berryman (Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield Christian) continued her strong play over the last month of the season when she corralled a loose ball just at the top of the box and put a shot up and over the Waynesburg goalkeeper just over five minutes into the game to give the Golden Tornadoes an early lead.  Waynesburg's Haley Johnson scored seven minutes later to even the match, and it looked like it was going to head to halftime tied before Waynesburg added a goal in the final moments of the half to take a 2-1 lead into the break.

Waynesburg continued to have the better of the play, but Geneva managed to hang around until things fell apart over the final 14 minutes.  The Yellow Jackets scored five times in the closing 14 minutes to turn a tight game into a blowout, and Waynesburg clinched its spot in the PAC playoffs with a 7-1 victory.

The Yellow Jackets finished the game with a 19-7 edge in shots, including a 16-6 advantage in shots on goal.  Freshman goalkeeper Jade Farnsworth (New Brighton, Pa./Riverside) made nine saves to keep Geneva in the game for most of the night.

Geneva's postseason chances now rest on tomorrow's Westminster and Franciscan match, slated for 5:00 p.m. in New Wilmington.  If Westminster, who is currently in first place and undefeated in the PAC, defeats Franciscan, the Golden Tornadoes would get into the postseason as the #6 seed, with a quarterfinal road match on Saturday.  If the Barons get a tie or a win, Geneva's season will be over.
