Women’s Tennis Back in Win Column with Victory at Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Geneva College women's tennis team got back into the win column on Tuesday night at Waynesburg, defeating the Yellow Jackets 5-4, despite forfeiting two matches because the Golden Tornadoes only had five players available for the match.  Geneva broke a four-match losing streak in improving its record to 2-6.  The match did not count in the conference standings.

Geneva won both of the doubles matches it played in, with seniors Kaylee McCall (Bemus Point, N.Y./Maple Grove) and Mady Paquet (Ellsworth, Wisc./Ellsworth) pulling out an 8-7 victory in #1 singles, winning the tiebreaker 7-3.  This match actually ended up being the last match of the night, with the winner clinching the victory, making for a dramatic tiebreaker scenario.  Senior Caleigh Pumphrey (Martinsburg, W.Va./Hedgesville) and freshman Delaney Winterhalter (Carnegie, Pa./South Fayette) won their match in #2 doubles, 8-3, with Geneva forfeiting the third in match during doubles competition.

In singles play, Paquet won her match in #2 singles by a score of 6-3, 7-5.  Winterhalter won in #4 singles 6-0, 6-2, while Pumphrey swept her opponent in #5 singles 6-0, 6-0.  The Golden Tornadoes didn't have a player for #6 singles, so Geneva also forfeited that match.

The Golden Tornadoes will be back in action this Saturday with a road match at La Roche, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
