Men’s Track and Field Continues Winning Ways with First-Place Finish at Bethany

BETHANY, W.Va. – The Geneva College men's track and field team picked up right where it left off over a year ago when the Golden Tornadoes won the 2020 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Indoor Championship just before COVID shut everything down.  Geneva placed first overall at the Bethany Invitational on Saturday, with all ten schools from the PAC competing.  The Golden Tornadoes finished with 110 points, while second-place Saint Vincent came in at 95 points.

Senior Dom Data (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) continued his strong performances.  The sprinter was named the PAC Indoor Men's Track and Field Athlete of the Year for his performance during last year's indoor season, and he also picked up right where he left off.  He won the 200m race in a time of 22.17 seconds, and he placed third in the 100m race with a time of 11.16 seconds.

Senior Stephen Nelson (Orono, Maine/Orono) also brought home a first-place finish, winning the 400m hurdles race in a time of 56.53 seconds.  Senior Ryan Kennell (Hartville, Ohio/Lake) wasn't far behind, finishing third in the 400m hurdles in 58.52 seconds.

Freshman Noah Foust (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) had a great first collegiate meet, winning the discus with a toss of 41.10 meters.  Junior Giovanni Segura (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brentwood) also placed well in the throws, finishing third in the shot put with a throw of 12.99 meters.

In addition, both the 4x100m and 4x400m Geneva relay teams came in first place, with times of 43.00 seconds and 3:32.10, respectively.

"The men had a great start to their season," said Head Coach Phil Thompson.  "We had a lot of very good performances and I am very happy with their effort.  They went into this meet like it was a business trip and they made a statement today.  We still have a lot of work to do, but this was a great start to the season."

Both the women and men's track and field teams get a chance to compete at home next week, when the Golden Tornadoes host the Geneva Invitational on Saturday beginning at 10:00 a.m.
