BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – A short-handed Geneva College women's soccer team fell on Saturday afternoon on Reeves Field to visiting Grove City College, 5-0. Grove City improved to 3-0-1 overall, 3-0 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Geneva took its first loss of the season in its first game in two weeks, dropping to 1-1 overall, 1-1 in the PAC.
Grove City opened the scoring quickly when Gianna D'Amato found herself open in the box in the second minute and quickly put the Wolverines ahead. D'Amato scored again in the 28
th minute, doubling the Grove City lead, and then the Wolverines scored a back-breaker with three seconds left in the half to take a 3-0 lead into the break.
Grove City added to its lead in the 64
th minute, and the Wolverines then finished off the scoring with a goal in the 85
th minute. Geneva's best chance to score came in the 78
th minute when senior
Natalia Muoio (Koppel, Pa./Beaver Falls) almost broke through, but her low shot to the far post was stopped by a diving save from Grove City's keeper.
The Wolverines finished the game with big advantages in shots, 19-3, and shots on goal, 11-2. Freshman goalkeeper
Julia Hart (Prospect, Pa./Slippery Rock) made six saves in the loss.
"This was a tough game for us," said Head Coach
Doug Miller. "Grove City is a very good team, with a long history under Coach Lamie of sustained success. Our program is going through some transitions, so there's a lot of new things at play for us. I thought our touches were just a little bit off today, but we'll refocus and regroup for our next opponent coming up in just a couple of days."
Geneva is back in action on Tuesday when the Golden Tornadoes travel to Chatham for a 4:30 p.m. match.
