Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Continues Winning Ways at Chatham

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – It's been quite an impressive start to the season for the Geneva College men's soccer team, and the Golden Tornadoes continued their winning ways with another dominant victory on Tuesday night, this time defeating Chatham on the road, 6-0.  The win improves Geneva's record to 4-0, its best start in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play since 2016, while Chatham dropped to 0-4.

It took almost no time for Geneva to get on the scoreboard.  Just over a minute into the game, sophomore Antonio Fiordilino (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) ran onto a ball deep in the Chatham box.  Fiordilino cut it back to junior Avery Wenger (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim), and Wenger scored to the far post from about five yards out to give Geneva the early lead.

The game settled down over the next thirty minutes, and then Geneva struck again off the foot of freshman Carnel Kerr (Flankers, Jamaica/Carlynton).  Kerr received a long ball from junior Ian Gelsinger (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim), and Kerr beat his man into the box and slotted the ball past the keeper in the 33rd minute, doubling the Golden Tornado lead.  Two minutes later, Geneva added to its lead when Wenger's cross into the box was deflected into the Chatham net by a Cougar defender, giving the Golden Tornadoes a 3-0 lead heading into the halftime break.

Geneva continued its pressure in the second half, and it was junior Alex Yoder (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) that struck first for Geneva in the 56th minute.  Yoder received a clearance off a Chatham corner 60 yards from goal, and he turned a made a sprint towards the Cougar goal for 50 yards, with a Chatham defender flanking him the whole way.  Despite the pressure, Yoder maintained possession during the long run, and his low shot after just entering the Chatham box beat the keeper to the far post, making it 4-0.

Nine minutes later, Wenger found the net again, this time off a corner kick that Kerr headed back across the net and found Wenger two yards from goal for an easy header to make it 5-0.

Junior Ethan Carroll (Dillsburg, Pa./Homeschool) completed the scoring the 86th minute, taking a cross from senior Mason Mee (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) on the back post and heading one back across the net and inside the far post to make it 6-0.  It was Carroll's first career goal.

Geneva finished the game with a 20-7 advantage in shots, including a 14-4 edge in shots.  Sophomore Gabe Kemp (Normalville, Pa./Connellsville) made three saves in the first 65 minutes before senior Nate Burkhart (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) finished up the shutout over the final 25 minutes, making one save.

"I was very happy with our focus and how we started tonight," said Head Coach Gary Dunda.  "Chatham fought to the end, but we were able to create consistent chances throughout the game that led to a number of goals for our guys."

The Golden Tornadoes get a week off before heading to Saint Vincent next Wednesday for a 1:00 p.m. matchup with the Bearcats.
