Women’s Golf Opens Season with Win at Franciscan

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – The Geneva College women's golf team was the last Golden Tornado program to get into action this school year, but the wait was worth it as the ladies defeated Franciscan by 79 strokes, shooting 400 as a team compared to 479 for the Barons.  The total represented a 96-shot improvement from Geneva's total to open last season, despite very windy conditions that made it difficult for the players.

The women's golf program is in its second season under the direction of Head Coach Andrew Fee, and Fee brought in several new freshmen that made an immediate impact for the Golden Tornadoes.  Freshman Hannah Therrell (Barrigada, Guam/Academy of Our Lady of Guam) led all golfers by shooting a 92, better than any individual score posted by Geneva in its inaugural season.

In addition, three other freshmen rounded out Geneva's top four.  Karly Devaney (Akron, Ohio/Springfield) shot a 101, Anna Kaminski (Middleville, Mich./Thornapple Kellogg) came in at 103, and Sarah Theus (Fleming, Fla./Fleming Isle) carded a 104.

"The windy conditions made for a tough day on the course, but we persevered well," said Coach Fee.  "I'm proud of the way we played after not having a competition for 531 days.  This was an impressive effort by our freshmen in their first collegiate match.  We will continue to work on things to improve in preparation for the conference tournament which is only three weeks away."

Geneva is back in action on Monday when the Golden Tornadoes take on Waynesburg at 1:30 p.m. at Connoquenessing Country Club.
