Baseball Returns the Favor by Sweeping Westminster

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – A day after the Geneva baseball team was swept at home by Westminster, the Golden Tornadoes returned the favor by winning two games against the Titans by scores of 8-1 and 10-7.  Geneva's record now stands at 10-17 overall, 6-15 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Westminster dropped to 11-16 overall, 7-14 in the PAC.

Sophomore Timothy Munz (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) took the mound in game one, and he put together a strong outing.  The Geneva offense got on the board in the bottom of the second with a run by sophomore Alex McKay (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton), and freshman Cameron Tyson (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) provided a bases-clearing double in the fourth to increase Geneva's lead to 4-0.

The Golden Tornadoes added three more runs in the top of the fifth on an RBI-single from Tyson and a two-run double from junior Alex Fee (New Castle, Pa./New Castle), both hits coming with two outs.

Geneva closed out its scoring in the sixth with a sacrifice fly from McKay to make it 8-0.  Westminster scored its only run in the bottom of the eighth as Geneva closed out the 8-1 victory.

Munz pitched eight innings in the game, giving up just five hits and one unearned run, while striking out five.  Tyson led the offense, going 2-for-5 with four RBIs.  McKay finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI, while Fee also added two hits, going 2-for-5 with two RBIs.  Freshman David Toruno (Menifee, Cali./Paloma Valley) got on base three times on a hit and two walks, while scoring twice.

Freshman Joshua Kearns (Akron, Ohio/Woodridge) took the ball in game two, and he was equally as effective as Munz.  Geneva provided Kearns with four runs in the top of the first as the first three batters reached base.  Senior Garrison Wieland (Sharpsville, Pa./Sharpsville) delivered a sacrifice fly, McKay contributed an RBI-single and Toruno delivered a two-out, two-RBI single to make it 4-0.

Westminster scored once in the bottom of the first, courtesy a Geneva error.  However, the Golden Tornadoes added three more runs in the top of the third after sophomore Abram King (Washington, Pa./Trinity) led off with a double, followed by a single from Wieland.  Later in the inning junior Adrian Tapia (Homestead, Fla./Keys Gate Charter) delivered an RBI-single, and Tyson followed that up with an RBI-double.

Geneva added single runs in the fourth, on an RBI-groundout from King, in the fifth, on a sacrifice fly from Tyson, and the sixth, on an RBI-single from Wieland, giving the Golden Tornadoes a 10-1 lead.

Westminster put up four runs in the bottom of the sixth, knocking Kearns out of the game in the process, pulling to within 10-5.  The Titans added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Geneva got the final out to secure the 10-7 win.

Kearns earned the win to move his record to 5-0 on the season, pitching five innings and giving up five hits and three runs, two earned.

Offensively, Geneva got contributions from just about everyone.  Sophomore Gabriel Morales (Homestead, Fla./South Dade) had two hits and three runs scored, King had two hits, two runs and an RBI, Wieland had two hits, two RBIs and a run, McKay had two hits, two runs and an RBI, Toruno had two hits and two RBIs, and Tyson also added two hits and two RBIs.

The Golden Tornadoes open a four-game series with Franciscan this coming week, beginning with a doubleheader at Franciscan on Thursday beginning at 6:00 p.m.
