BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College women's tennis team put forth a great effort against first-place Grove City on Wednesday night, but the Golden Tornadoes fell just short in a couple key matches and dropped a 6-3 decision to the Wolverines. Grove City improved to 4-1 overall, 4-0 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Geneva fell to 2-3, 2-3 in the PAC.
The doubles action is where Geneva had its chances. The Golden Tornadoes lost all three doubles matches, but the Golden Tornadoes lost tiebreakers in both #2 doubles and #3 doubles, including getting to match point several times in #2 doubles before losing. Both those losses proved to be the difference in Geneva earning a huge win and falling just short.
Geneva had better luck in singles tiebreakers. Junior
Kaylee McCall (Bemus Point, N.Y./Maple Grove) won her match in #2 singles in a tiebreaker, 6-3, 2-6, 10-6. Junior
Mady Paquet (Ellsworth, Wisc./Ellsworth) won in #4 singles in a tiebreaker, 4-6, 7-6(5), 10-5. Lastly, sophomore
Emily Grove (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley) pulled out a great tiebreaker win in #5 singles, 6-3, 3-6, 12-10.
"We played and fought the hardest I've seen in a long time," said Head Coach
Mandee Craft. "Kaylee especially dug in so deep after literally being on the court for four straight hours to win her singles match. I am so proud to coach this team!"
Geneva returns to action this Friday with a match at Bethany at 4:00 p.m.
