Women’s Tennis Sweeps Bethany

BETHANY, W.Va. – The Geneva College women's team picked up a convincing win at Bethany on Friday afternoon, sweeping the Bison 9-0.  Geneva improved to 3-3 overall, 3-3 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Bethany dropped to 0-5, 0-5 in the PAC.

Geneva began the match with three dominating wins in doubles.  Senior Felicity Orndoff (New Stanton, Pa./Greensburg Catholic Central) and graduate student Jana Newberry (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) won in #1 doubles, 8-4.  Juniors Kaylee McCall (Bemus Point, N.Y./Maple Grove) and Caleigh Pumphrey (Martinsburg, W.Va./Hedgesville) won in #2 doubles, 8-3, and junior Mady Paquet (Ellsworth, Wisc./Ellsworth) and freshman Ella Miller (Freedom, Pa./Ambridge) easily won in #3 doubles, 8-0.

The Golden Tornadoes were just as impressive in singles action.  Orndoff won her match in #1 singles 6-4, 6-4.  McCall won in #2 singles 6-2, 6-0, Newberry won in #3 singles 6-1, 6-0, and Paquet won in #4 singles 6-2, 6-1.  Sophomore Emily Grove (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley) won in #5 singles 6-1, 6-4, and sophomore Laura Lin Comollo (Smyrna, Del./Polytech) finished out the sweep in #6 singles 6-1, 6-0. 

"It's always fun to get a 9-0 win," said Head Coach Mandee Craft.  "Felicity especially had a great battle today, as she was down 4-2 and won four straight points against a tough opponent."

Geneva is back in action on Monday with a home match against Westminster at 6:00 p.m.
