Data Breaks Another School Record as Geneva Track and Field Eases into New Semester

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Geneva College men's and women's track and field teams eased into the semester with a fairly light load of participants at the Edinboro Al Hall Freedom Games on Saturday, but senior Dom Data (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) added another school record to his impressive resume, this one in the 60-meter race, to highlight the day for the Golden Tornadoes.

Data ran a school-record time of 6.96 seconds in the preliminaries of the 60-meter race, and then he ran 6.99 seconds in the finals to win the event.  Data also added a first-place finish in the 200-meter race with a time of 21.97 seconds.

In addition for the men, junior Josiah Helmer (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) finished fifth in the 3000-meter race with a time of 9:38.09.  Sophomore Lawiltaye Robinson (Tampa, Fla./Bloomingdale) came in sixth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.97 seconds.  In the field events, senior Giovanni Segura (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brentwood) finished sixth in the weight throw (13.20m) and seventh in the shot put (12.95m).

For the women, junior Abby Laborde (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield) finished second in the 3000-meter race with a time of 11:05.11, while sophomore Jaci Mennetti (Coolspring, Pa./Dubois Area Catholic) finished fourth (11:22.97) and senior Katryn Gatchell (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) fifth (11:24.25).  Junior Naomi Swartzbaugh (Spartansburg, Pa./Spartansburg) placed sixth in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing in 9.97 seconds.

"This was a good first meet back from break," said Head Coach Phil Thompson.  "It was important to see where everyone was at, and overall, I'm pleased with our performances.  Dom had another great day to highlight everyone, breaking another school record.  He makes it look very easy sometimes."

The teams will head to Youngstown State next Friday to participate in the Youngstown State Collegiate Invitational on January 21.
