WASHINGTON, Pa. – First-place Washington & Jefferson jumped out to a big early lead against the Geneva College women's basketball team on Monday night, and the Presidents controlled the rest of the game on their way to a 95-63 victory over the Golden Tornadoes. W&J improved 14-4 overall, 11-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Geneva dropped to 7-10, 6-6 in the PAC.
Geneva scored on both of its first two possession on a layup from junior Mia San Nicolas (Sinajana, Guam/Academy of Our Lady of Guam) and a three-pointer from junior Tess Liggett (Columbiana, Ohio/Columbiana). The lead was short-lived, though, as W&J came out on fire. The Presidents hit their first five three-pointers, and when they weren't hitting long range shots, they were breaking through the Geneva press for layups. By the time the first quarter had ended, W&J led 38-13 and had made 15-of-19 (79%) of its shots.
W&J finally started to cool off once the second quarter started, but the damage had already been done with the big early Presidents' lead. Geneva never got closer than 25 points the rest of the way, though W&J only outscored the Golden Tornadoes by seven points over the final three quarters in finishing out the 95-63 victory.
San Nicolas led the team with 12 points and 12 rebounds, while senior Shannon Wolfe (Alliance, Ohio/West Branch) and sophomore Emily Bucheit (Kane, Pa./Kane) each added 10 points. Geneva shot 35.3% from the floor, including a 6-of-18 (33%) effort from long range, while committing 30 turnovers.
W&J finished the game shooting 43.8% from the floor, including 13-of-32 (40.6%) from three-point range. The Presidents had four players in double figures, led by Kamryn Lach's 15 points. W&J committed 16 turnovers and won the battle of the boards, 54-40.
Geneva continues with its busy week with a home game on Wednesday against Grove City at 5:30 p.m. The Wolverines currently sit in second place in the PAC.
