Kent Helps Geneva Run Past Bethany

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College football team got a big second half from freshman Logan Kent against Bethany on Saturday night, helping the Golden Tornadoes break open the game in a 34-6 victory over the Bison.  Geneva improved to 2-6 overall, 2-4 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Bethany dropped to 1-7, 0-6 in the PAC.

Geneva got on the board first on its second drive of the game when an 18-yard touchdown pass from sophomore Brutus Ogilvie to junior Hilton McClain Jr. capped off a 71-yard drive.

Both offenses struggled for most of the first half, though.  The Geneva defense limited the Bison for most of the half, stopping Bethany on fourth down in the first quarter, coming up with a punt block from sophomore Ray Richard, and adding an interception when senior O'Neal Cotton picked off a pass.

Two Geneva fumbles, though, prevented the Golden Tornadoes from extending their lead, and the Bison finally pushed across a score in the second quarter, with Richard blocking the extra point, sending the game into halftime with Geneva holding a 7-6 lead.

On the opening drive of the second half, Geneva's defense came up with another fourth down stop deep in Golden Tornado territory when sophomore Alex Gonzalez came up with a big tackle, and this time the offense drove 82 yards for a touchdown, capped off by a Kent 24-yard touchdown reception from Ogilvie.

The Golden Tornado defense came up with another stop, and Geneva's offense went 88 yards for a touchdown this time, with Kent scoring again, this one on a 24-yard touchdown run, pushing the Geneva lead to 20-6 heading into the fourth quarter.

Junior Damian Lomeli picked off a pass in the Geneva endzone on Bethany's next drive, his PAC-leading fifth interception of the season, after senior Nicolas Ottaviani tipped the pass at the line of scrimmage.

Geneva's offense proceeded to put together another long touchdown drive, this one moving 80 yards.  Kent scored his third touchdown of the half, running this one in from 35 yards away as Bethany did not have an answer for Kent's speed on the edge.

The Golden Tornadoes finished out the scoring when Ogilvie scored from five yards out with just a little under six minutes remaining, accounting for the final score in the 34-6 victory.

Kent was the star of the day for Geneva, rushing just nine time for a career-best 160 yards and two touchdowns, while catching three balls for 69 yards and a touchdown.  Sophomore Desmond Lewis rushed for a career-high 126 yards, while McClain Jr. continued his recent strong play with five catches for 77 yards and a touchdown.  As a team Geneva finished with 493 yards of offense, 347 on the ground.  Ogilvie finished with 146 yards passing and two touchdowns, along with a rushing touchdown.

Several players had strong games defensively for Geneva.  Ottaviani finished with a career-best 15 tackles.  Senior Derrick Sneed added a career-high 13 tackles, while sophomore Gabe Trexler finished with 10 tackles.  Sophomore Alex Gonzalez added a career-best nine tackles, including 2.5 TFLs.  Lomeli, Cotton and sophomore Brandon Graham each picked off a pass.

Geneva heads to Thiel next Saturday for a 12:00 p.m. kickoff, the final road game of the season.
